Omicron in LuxembourgScientists predict up to 1,000 cases a day

RTL Today
As in neighbouring countries, the new variant will spread rapidly in Luxembourg and new cases will increase, according to Dr Alexander Skupin in an interview with RTL.

Dr. Skupin, who is one of the experts on the Luxembourgish Covid-19 task force, could not provide any further details as to when this drastic change will occur in the country. The group of scientists assumes that the Omicron variant will be dominant by February, with up to 1,000 new positive cases per day in Luxembourg.

Dr. Skupin puts things into perspective, however, explaining that it all depends on the preparedness and behaviour of the population in the face of this situation. He reiterates the importance of scrupulously respecting the sanitary measures and of voluntarily reducing social contacts - the spread of the virus increases with the number of people gathered together.
It is also necessary to remember that booster shots are crucial, without them, up to 3,000 new infections per day could be expected.

However, the expert did not wish to confirm the information that the new variant causes fewer severe forms of the disease in infected people. He concluded that the task force does not yet have enough data to make a statement on this subject.
