The unemployment curve already indicated a slow but sure decline in November. After having come close to the pre-crisis reference level in October, the unemployment rate even fell below it in November.

The new figures revealed on Monday by STATEC indicate that the unemployment rate now stands at 5.3%, “below the level it was at before the crisis”.

At the end of November, Luxembourg still had 15,232 resident jobseekers. This is means 409 fewer people registered with the National Employment Agency (ADEM) than a month earlier, but 2,927 fewer than in November 2020. This is a drop of 16.1% in one year.

In total, 7,615 people are currently receiving full unemployment benefits. This is a 20.9% decrease compared to last year.

The number of long-term unemployed (registered for at least 12 months with ADEM) has fallen by 12.4% in one year. However, they still represent 51% of resident jobseekers.

Nearly 10,500 jobs available

The number of new registrations “remains very low”, STATEC reports, pointing out that it “is around the level seen in 2017 and 2018". In November, 2,260 residents registered with ADEM, 200 fewer than in November 2020.

In November, employers reported 3,527 vacancies to STATEC, an increase of 38.9% compared to November 2020.

“The dynamic observed in recent months has therefore continued,” ADEM notes. Luxembourg currently has 10,452 vacancies. This is 59.2% more than a year ago.
