Luxembourg CityParents' representatives demand safer measures in schools

The representatives believe the rising infection rates of the last weeks are reason enough to demand that stronger measures be brought in.

The parents’ association in the capital argues that many of the measures are not being implemented thoroughly enough. They therefore want to make testing in schools mandatory. So far, parents have the option to withhold their children from regular testing.

Jean-Marc Cloos commented: “We also believe that we must talk about masks again. The mandate in schools has already been scrapped in many instances. But since infection numbers among children have recently risen from 450 to 550, and then even to 650 per week, we think it’s time for stricter measures.”

The Ministry of Education has already made clear that no new restrictions or measures will be introduced before the Christmas holidays. Spokeswoman Francine Vanost also underlined that the test participation rate is significant enough: “More than 98% of pupils in cycles two to four take part in the testing procedures.”

Government officials further underline that the national parents’ association has repeatedly argued against mask mandates. The Luxembourg City council will evaluate whether they are legally allowed to go beyond current regulations, councilwoman Colette Mart concluded.
