Hospitalisations are rising in Luxembourg and a care unit at the Centre Hospitalier du Nord has been reserved for Covid patients. Nurses there have decided to speak out.

Valerie, a nurse who works in an intensive care unit, poignantly testifies that seeing a patient die almost alone, with limited access to family, is inhumane to her.

Meanwhile, anaesthetist Tom Manderscheid is urging those who have not done so to protect themselves by getting vaccinated against Covid-19. It’s the best medium-term solution for one’s social life, he says.

Christophe, deputy head of department, maintains that solidarity goes both ways. He says that we have freedoms, but everyone must contribute so that we can finally bring this pandemic under control. We have a long winter ahead of us, a marathon whose length we don’t know, so we must show solidarity and get vaccinated, he adds.

The problem is simple for the hospital staff: if the number of Covid patients continues to rise, surgeries will have to be postponed and visits will again be limited as the holidays approach, which is very difficult for patients and families.

This is a situation that the hospital wants to avoid at all costs and therefore it is asking the public to pull the handbrake in the coming weeks. It will be necessary to all move forward together if we want to avoid the situations experienced last year, the medical staff conclude.
