Luxembourg City is actively preparing for the end-of-year celebrations. Eleven trees have already been installed in the capital's neighbourhoods. The "king" tree was erected on Place d'Armes on Wednesday.
While the first snowflakes fell on the highest peaks of the Vosges on Wednesday morning, the "king of forests" was installed on Place d'Armes, the central square of the capital and the Christmas market.
The tree hails "from a private individual in Luxembourg, like the fifteen large trees that we install in the capital and its neighbourhoods. All the trees come from Luxembourg," according to Christian Joly, who is in charge of the municipality's parks department. The municipal workers are responsible for cutting down and removing the trees that private individuals prefer to see disappear near their homes.
The one installed on the most central of the capital's squares was carefully selected for its majestic silhouette: "It is about 12 metres high and 8 metres wide," Joly explains.
The city has not yet revealed its 'Winterlights' programme for the end of the year, but Luxembourg City's Christmas market will make a comeback from 19 November after being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
