An even more contagious subvariant of the Delta variant is gaining ground in Luxembourg. According to a statement published by the LNS on Friday morning, the Delta variant’s parental lineage B.1.617.2 continues to be the most frequent (57.7%), but it is closely followed by the new mutations ‘AY.34' (14.1%) and ‘AY.4' (10.7%).

This AY lineage also accounts for 44.4% of post-vaccination breakthrough cases. This suggests that the vaccines are even less effective against this lineage compared to the parental lineage of the Delta variant.

Other countries have previously already issued warnings over new, more virulent mutations of the coronavirus, some as early as August, e.g. the UK, the USA, or Israel.
