Sauces, spices, salads, soya: a genotoxic carcinogen has been detected in new products on sale in Luxembourg and elsewhere.
In August, it was reported that many products, mainly ice creams and food supplements, had been recalled from the shelves in Luxembourg and Belgium. One month later, the recalls continue in the Grand Duchy's supermarkets.
The cause: the presence of ethylene oxide, a genotoxic carcinogenic substance that "can pose a problem when consumed regularly" according to the Government Commissariat for Quality, Fraud and Food Safety.
The list, which is regularly updated by the Luxembourg Consumer Protection Association (ULC), now includes soy-based cooking creams (Provamel), prepared salads (Boni), food supplements (Curcuma piperine, Superdiet), spices (ginger powder, Schani) and sauces (La William).
These products can be found in supermarkets such as Delhaize, Cora, Colruyt, or Naturata. Until these products are completely removed from the shelves, residents should obviously avoid buying or consuming them.
Remember that many other products (Snickers ice cream, Smarties, Lion, Carte d'or, Nestlé, M&M's) are on this list which is updated every week. It can be consulted on the Luxembourg food safety website.
