Sunday would have traditionally been the so-called "Fouersonndeg", a high point for the yearly funfair which graces the Glacis with its presence. This year, a Covid alternative is taking place.

A scaled-down version of the Schueberfouer began in Limpertsberg on 21 August, with 41 attractions on offer to visitors. Despite the smaller scale, it has proved a success for stall proprietors so far.

Despite grey skies and the odd rain shower, Sunday saw a large number of visitors attending the fair, which brought relief to many of the stallholders.

Charel Hary, president of the National Federation of Fairground Traders, said visitor numbers were slightly higher than expected, with a steady flow of customers at the stalls. Evenings saw a greater influx of visitors, creating a pleasant atmosphere in spite of the health crisis.

People are permitted to move freely in the area comprising the funfair, although masks must be worn throughout. Food and drink stalls can be visited with the CovidCheck, which has not deterred guests from filling the available terraces.

Alexandre Dotremont, who manages one of the food stalls, said it had been a positive start with the CovidCheck system working well. He expressed optimism for the coming weeks, as there was no difference in visitor numbers on weekdays and weekends. It is clear that the public have missed the funfair and are taking advantage of the opportunity to visit while they can.

However, the "Fun um Glacis" is not without its detractors. On social media, some users have criticised the high prices or long wait times to get through the CovidCheck system. Despite this, guests on the ground do not all agree with the criticism.

One visitor said they appreciated the space available, as it made them feel more secure. Others said they were still able to have fun in spite of the Covid measures, while another guest expressed that it was nice to be among people again, to enjoy themselves after the numerous lockdowns.

Although the "Fun um Glacis" may not replace the scope of the Schueberfouer, traders are nonetheless more than happy with the situation as it stands.
