Widespread flooding has struck Luxembourg after heavy rain this week, with many evacuated from their homes. Here is some handy advice if your home has been affected by the floods.
Insurers have turned to social media to dispense advice to clients on protecting themselves and their homes ahead of potential insurance claims. RTL has compiled a list of useful steps to take if you have been affected by the floods this week.
DO NOT PUT YOURSELF AT RISK
First and foremost, avoid putting yourself in danger. If electrical currents are still active in the building, it is advisable to cut off the electricity supply before approaching any flooded areas in order to avoid electrocution.
Try to stay informed of any alerts or updates through the media in case of any evacuations or warnings, such as not consuming tapwater. If in doubt, contact your local municipality.
When the floods die down and it is time to inspect and clean up the damage, make sure you're well equipped. Protective clothing and items such as boots, gloves, goggles and helmets can prevent potential injury. Be aware that flooded areas may conceal traps or submerged items, and structures could have suffered water damage.
COMPENSATION PROCEDURES
Prior to cleaning up your home, make sure you document the damage. Take as many photos as possible, and make a list of all damaged areas and items. This documentation will help insurers to estimate the damage when processing a claim.
You must ensure your electrical installation is in good condition before restoring power to your home. The same applies for gas mains. After restarting your heating system, try to disperse the humidity as much as possible throughout your home to prevent bacteria. Thoroughly clean and disinfect any living areas.
Finally, before consuming any tap water, do check with the local authorities in case it has been contaminated, as floods frequently disrupt wastewater treatment routes.
