Although most MPs will certainly need more time to read the 80-page document in detail, a few already commented on Waringo's report after the end of the respective presentation on Monday morning.
Martine Hansen, fraction leader of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), first emphasised that both management and staff in the analysed senior and care homes have acted with the best intentions and to the best of their abilities.
She then went on to criticise the government's lack of precision: "It is clear that nothing was clear for these institutions. There was a complete lack of understandable recommendations, and sometimes a lack of any advice whatsoever. Furthermore, it is just as clear that during the calmer times, the government did not establish an action plan, a fact which Jeannot Waringo also highlighted during his presentation."
MP Sven Clement from the Pirate Party also addressed the flawed communication from the Ministry of Family Affairs and Integration. He conveyed his belief that over the course of the pandemic, the department lead by Minister Cahen had slowly begun disappearing altogether.
Gilles Baum, fraction leader of the Democratic Party, strongly refuted this line of criticism: "I can only repeat this one more time: a recommendation, which is in force and has not been retracted, counts! I think it is clear that all senior and care homes have their own structure and work differently, which is why we have to leave them enough room to manoeuvre. These institutions are run by professionals and they knew exactly what to do with our recommendations."
Earlier this year, CSV demanded that Minister Cahen step down for her failure in assuring the safety of senior and care homes. Today, Martine Hansen underlined that she first wanted to await the results of the Tuesday discussion before further commenting on the issue. MP Michel Wolter, who first brought the Waringo report into motion, was not physically present during the presentation on Monday morning. Due to his role as Bascharage Mayor, the CSV politician joined the session via video conference.
