In 2025, the Grand Duchy will take part in the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, an event of worldwide renown and a new opportunity to present Luxembourg's know-how.
It is officially confirmed: The State Council has decided that Luxembourg will participate in the World Expo in Osaka in 2025. The event will take place from 13 April to 13 October 2025 on Yumeshima, an artificial island along the coast of Osaka. The theme of the event is "Designing the society of the future, imagining our life of tomorrow", with sustainable development as the main focus.
Luxembourg's ties to Japan
The government stated that Luxembourg has "very close bilateral relations with Japan". Ties which date back more than 90 years and which are are supported by "the closeness of the royal and imperial houses of both countries", as demonstrated by the State visit to Japan in 2017. The opening of the first resident Luxembourg embassy in Tokyo in 1987 shows "the long-standing privileged relations between Japan and Luxembourg", according to the government.
The links are also economic: Luxembourg has a Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office (LTIO) in Tokyo within its international economic promotion network, which provides support for Luxembourg companies wishing to develop their activities in Japan and promotes the Grand Duchy's economy in Japan. Japan is Luxembourg's second largest trading partner in Asia. Commercial relations with the world's third largest economy have considerable potential for development.
Luxembourg pavilion, but on a smaller scale
Every World Expo has its own pavilion. Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot declared that Osaka 2025 will mark Luxembourg's 25th participation in a world exhibition. The pavilion that the government intends to develop for this occasion will "perfectly reflect the government's desire to lead the Grand Duchy towards a sustainable and innovative future", Fayot stressed. The Minister announced that this edition of the World Expo will also allow private sector actors to benefit from a prime showcase to present Luxembourg to the world as "a precursor country of the circular economy".
The government has decided to reserve a medium-sized plot of land with the organisers of the Osaka 2025 World Expo to build the Luxembourg pavilion, which will be much smaller than the one for the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, which is planned to still take place this year following the pandemic-induced postponement.
