Next week, as pupils across Luxembourg return to school for the autumn term, the Grand Ducal police will launch their annual safety campaign aimed at drivers.

Police presence will increase around schools, with more checks on drivers, and fluorescent vests will be distributed to the youngest schoolchildren.

Officers will be monitoring speed and parking in particular in zones around school buildings.

This year also sees the launch of a brand new competition in which children can decorate their own vests and submit them with their classes.

Parents and drivers are asked to exercise caution on the roads and to model the correct behaviour for the children.

Police advice for parents

-Practice the walk to school with your children and point out potential dangers.
-Choose the safest route rather than the shortest.
-Follow the rules of the road, even for short distances.
-Ensure your child always exits the car on to the pavement.
-Don't wait on the wrong side of the road in case your child spontaneously runs across the road to you.
-Dress the children in high-visibility clothing, with light colours or reflective items.
-Always wear helmets when cycling to school.
-If using a bike trailer, ensure it is clearly visible to drivers.

Advice for children

-Don't walk on the pavement edges.
-Older children should let younger children walk on the inside of the pavement.
-Only cross the road at zebra crossings or traffic lights, and always check both ways.
-Be careful around driveways and parked cars which may obscure visibility.

Advice for drivers

-Children often do not understand the dangers of traffic or may be anxious around the return to school. Therefore:
-Drive carefully around schools and bus stops.
-Reduce your speed when you see children walking.
-Always be ready to slam on the brakes.
