MORTGAGE RATES – The Central Bank of Luxembourg has published the most recent rates negotiated by the country's banks, bringing some good news for borrowers with variable-rate loans. The average variable rate, one of the most commonly used in the Grand Duchy, is now edging closer to 3%. Fixed rates, however, remain stable.

BETTEL'S MALAYSIA VISIT – Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel has spent the last two days on a working visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he met with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Malaysian counterpart, Mohamad Hasan. Due to the current geopolitical tensions and economic developments in the region, more and more European countries are focusing on deepening economic and political relations with Asian partners, including the Grand Duchy

WOLVES SPOTTEDTwo wolves have been captured on camera by the public administration of Wallonia in a forest near Anlier, just a few kilometres from the Luxembourg border. Laurent Schley, head of the Wildlife and Hunting Department at Luxembourg's Nature and Forest Agency has told RTL that it is quite possible the wolves will cross into Luxembourg, or may even have already done so.

SCHUEBERFOUER ENDS – Luxembourg’s beloved Schueberfouer came to a close last night after 20 festive days, ending with the traditional fireworks display at 10pm. For those who missed it, the full fireworks show is available to watch in this video. Earlier that evening, visitors could also enjoy rides and attractions at half price until 8pm.

World

FRANCE PROTESTS – According to the French Interior Ministry, over 500 people were arrested during protests in France yesterday. More than 200,000 people demonstrated across the country against the government's austerity plans.

BERLIN BLACKOUT – Around 20,000 Berlin homes and businesses are still without power, a day after a fire hit electricity pylons in what police labelled a suspected arson attack. Police said they "do not rule out a political motive" after an unnamed anarchist group posted a claim of responsibility online for setting the blaze.

KIRK ASSASSINATION – Right-wing youth activist and influencer Charlie Kirk, a major ally of President Donald Trump has been shot dead in an apparent assassination. Kirk was hit while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Video from the scene showed him addressing a large crowd when the sound of a single shot rang out. Authorities have not arrested a suspect in Kirk's shooting, described as a "targeted attack" in a statement from Utah's Department of Public Safety.

YEMEN MISSILE STRIKES – Israel's army says it has intercepted a missile fired from Yemen earlier today, a day after Israeli forces carried out air strikes there that killed 35 people and wounded more than 130. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the missile attack on Israel.

Sport

CYCLING – Italy's Giulio Pellizzari celebrated the highlight of his career when upstaging the big guns in yesterday’s Vuelta a Espana 17th stage as Jonas Vingegaard retained the leader's red jersey. The 21-year-old crossed the summit finish 16 seconds clear of Briton Tom Pidcock. The race finishes on Sunday in Madrid with heightened security planned in the Spanish capital.

ATHLETICS – Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt has backed either Kishane Thompson or Oblique Seville to beat defending champion Noah Lyles in the 100m at the world championships in Tokyo at the weekend, making it the first world title since 2015. US runners have triumphed in the last four world championships.

We're going to see quite a few clouds in the sky today, with an occasional bout of rain breaking up the day. We can also expect some wind gusts, with speeds reaching up to 50 km/h.

In the evening, rainfall might intensify – but nowhere near the deluge from earlier in the week.The temperature starts off at 11–13°C, and goes up to the 19°C region in the afternoon.
