While the world is still waiting for a Covid vaccine, Luxembourg has already reserved 420,000 doses via a pre-order by the European Union.
This means that the country will receive 0.14% of the total 300 million vaccines the EU has ordered. These numbers were released a few days ago by the Ministry of Health. In her response to a parliamentary question by ADR deputy Jeff Engelen, Paulette Lenert explained that there are currently 169 candidates at the global level working on a vaccine against Covid-19, with 26 of them having reached the human testing phase.
Once vaccines are approved, Luxembourg will decide on the basis of its testing strategy which vaccines will be best suited and made available in the Grand Duchy.
To reach this step, vaccines will have to be tested by the European Medicines Agency on their safety and efficiency. Those who pass these tests will obtain a marketing authorisation for the European market.
