Youth unemployment has skyrocketed in Luxembourg and was at 24.7% in April, compared to 20.5% in March.

The Luxembourgish societal impact company "Youth & Work" described this figure as "a record high".

According to statistics released by Eurostat, unemployment among young people aged between 16 and 25 increased from 20.5% in March to 24.7% in April. When it comes to youth unemployment, Luxembourg thus places 3rd in the EU, just behind Spain and Greece.

Youth & Work stated that the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus was especially affecting young people without professional experience or qualifications. The company went on to say that it was shocking that this topic was not being discussed publicly as they had been dealing with this problem since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March.

According to one of Youth & Work's coaches, Christof Grozinger, young people without a job have difficulties finding employment elsewhere or risk disruptions of their vocational training. Grozinger also stated that poverty among young people was also increasing. He stressed that young people who try to enter the labour market during a recession will be worse off in the long run.

Youth & Work demands that all political and public actors should decide on structural changes and short-term measures as soon as possible.
