The cabinet of Rhineland-Palatinate Minister-President Malu Dreyer visited Xavier Bettel on Tuesday afternoon at Senningen Castle.

The programme covered border-crossing mobility, the jobs market and environmental protection, as well as questions of tax.

A number of municipalities from the border regions had approached the Minister-President with concerns that they were making fiscal losses due to the number of German citizens working across the border in Luxembourg. They requested double taxation, respectively a reimbursement on behalf of the Grand Duchy.

Although the atmosphere was generally collegial at the ensuing press conference, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel switched from German to Luxembourgish when it came to the above topic.

He said he did not accept that some people were trying to spread the feeling that the whole border region had to suffer because of Luxembourg's economical growth. The Grand Duchy has been creating jobs, social transfers, pensions - all part of an important dynamic in the region.

Bettel went on to say that he felt it was unacceptable to say other areas were suffering from having Luxembourg as a neighbour.

Luxembourg has participated in a number of projects which the whole border region can profit from - such as the planned route between the capital and Wittlich which is to reopen in 2024.
