
The Eurostat data show that Luxembourg’s CO2 emissions stand at 20 tonnes per capita, with an EU average of 8.8 tonnes - which means Luxembourg’s emissions are 2.2 times higher than the average. Estonia comes in second at 16 tonnes, followed by Ireland (13.3), the Czech Republic (12.3), and the Netherlands (12).
Our neighbouring countries fair slightly better, though only France is below the EU average at 7.2 tonnes. Germany’s emissions come in at 11.3, and Belgium’s at 10.5 tonnes per capita.

Luxembourg also has one of the highest levels of CO2 emissions from new passenger cars, at 127 grams per kilometre. This puts the Grand Duchy 6th from the top, behind Estonia (132.8), Latvia (128.8), Poland (127.6), Lithuania (127.4), and Germany (127.2). The EU average is 118.5.
