
The number increases to around 6 million people worldwide, 600,000 of which are non-smokers.
The Ministry of Health, alongside the World Health Organisation, is hoping to raise awareness of World No-Tobacco Day, which encourages a day of abstinence from tobacco consumption.
90 percent of lung cancer cases can be traced back to smoking. One in five people in Luxembourg smoke with the age demographic with the most smokers made up of those aged between 16 and 34. A national campaign against tobacco (National Tobacco Control Plan) has been in force since 2016 in Luxembourg, lasting until 2020. In 2017, a new anti-smoking law was voted into place, in line with the EU directive 2014/40/EU.
A new system was also put into place alongside this directive, to improve and guarantee traceability for cigarette packs across Europe. Luxembourg helped to implement this system, which aims to reduce illegal trade of tobacco products.
