Born in Dudelange, Berg started his professional career at the ARBED, working as a cutting machine operator. He first became active in trade unions in the 1950s.
In 1969, Benny Berg was voted into the Chamber of Deputies for the first time and started his political career in earnest.
He was appointed to the post of minister for employment and social issues and the post of minister for family affairs and housing under the Thorn-Vouel government in 1974.
Between 1979 and 1984, Benny Berg became the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party’s faction leader and was appointed to the post of minister for health and social issues in the first Santer-Poos government.
While he wasn’t re-elected in the 1989 general elections, he could have moved up into parliament in 1990 but left the seat to fellow Dudelanger and LSAP politician Marc Zanussi.
In 2012, the socialist advised Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker in his tripartite negotiations.
Apart from his political mandates, Benny Berg was also involved in social projects such as the Fondation Kräizbierg for people with disabilities, of which he was an administrative board member until 1995.
