Much importance is attached to the Luxembourgish language in Luxembourg, but there's a divide over whether it's a language of integration, according to a survey on the role of the Luxembourgish language presented on Thursday morning.

1,053 people took part in this study recently carried out for the Ministry of Education between the end of January and the beginning of February. The sample was 60% Luxembourger and 40% non-Luxembourger.

Divide on integration language

French is spoken by 98% of those surveyed, so it still has major importance. On the question of which language should serve as the language of integration, 60% of those surveyed say Luxembourgish. If we examine the numbers closely, it's possible to see that the non-Luxembourgers see French as being better as an integration language.

72% of those surveyed speak the three official languages. 73% even speak more than four languages, which once again demonstrates the Grand Duchy's multilingualism, seen in this country as being of unquestionable benefit.

Strengthen the Luxembourgish language

78% of those surveyed expressed a desire for the Luxembourgish language to be further strengthened. Tommy Klein of TNS Ilres explained that this point of view is strongest among those who already speak the language. Still, about half of those who don't speak it agree that its daily use should be promoted.

Polyglot youth

In terms of linguistic competence, the youth are far ahead. 94% of them speak Luxembourgish and 92% speak the three official languages. The multilingual public school system is held to explain these numbers.
