In collaboration with the Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre in Nancy, the Health Directorate published its eighth monthly report on adverse reactions reported in Luxembourg for vaccines against coronavirus.

The report states that 0.22% of all vaccine doses administered in Luxembourg up until the end of November 2021 resulted in side effects which were reported to authorities. 0.22% represents 2,016 cases out of 917,000 doses administered in that timeframe.

To break the numbers down further: three-quarters of the 2,016 adverse reactions were reported to be “not severe”. This means the people in question suffered symptoms lasting a few days, such as fever, chills, a reaction at the time of vaccination, headaches, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness or fatigue. These are all considered to be normal reactions and show that the immune system has been activated, according to the report.

Of the 917,000 doses administered, 451 people reported “severe” reactions. 300 of these suffered flu symptoms which meant they could either not go to work, or could not leave their homes due to illness.

125 people had to be hospitalised, while 18 people suffered potentially fatal side effects and 11 people died. All these cases were reported in conjunction with a dose of the vaccine; however, it does not necessarily mean they were directly caused by the vaccination.

Over the last month, the study reports 21 cases of adverse reactions, with 11 hospitalisations. The people in question received doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer or Johnson&Johnson vaccines.
