Since the launch of the carpool lane on the A3 Dudelange motorway in March 2025, police have caught 448 drivers travelling alone in their cars while using the lane reserved for vehicles with multiple occupants.
These figures were revealed in an answer by Minister of Mobility Yuriko Backes and Minister of Home Affairs Léon Gloden to a parliamentary question submitted by Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) Dan Biancalana and Mars Di Bartolomeo.
According to the ministers, police checks led to fines for those caught using the lane incorrectly, while the radar cameras that have already been installed are still in operating on a trial basis and have not yet been used for enforcement.
The ministers also indicated that the new Luxembourg's Motorway Traffic Control Centre (CITA) system, which will automate carpool lane monitoring, will be installed on Luxembourg's motorways from autumn this year.
Technical tests are currently ongoing, with the aim of full deployment in the coming months.
