The hamburger is the undisputed icon among the wide range of fast-food snacks now on offer. Be it from a drive-in, at a village fair, a sporting event next to a Mettwurst and Thüri – pardon, Grillwurst – or simply at home in the garden on the barbecue, the burger found its way into our food culture many years ago and is now known, loved, and indispensable among young and old all over the world. Quick to make, simple and tasty.

Rarely has a dish been requested as often for the RTL Readers’ Choice survey as this absolute cult classic. The sheer number of people who submitted nominations, whether from a food truck, bistro, restaurant, or anywhere else, shows that the hamburger is a delicacy which lies close to the nation’s hearts.

The votes have been counted, so without further ado, here are Luxembourg’s top 10 places to enjoy a burger!
*All restaurants that made it into the Top 10 will receive a sticker recognising them as one of the country’s best. Over 3,500 people participated in our survey.

Readers’ Choice Top 10: Best Burger in Luxembourg

1st place: Flux

Opened: August 2017
Address: 5 Bousserstrooss, 9144 Hierheck Esch-sur-Sûre
Contact: 26889543
Online: https://www.fluxburgers.com/
Most popular burger: Smash-Cheeseburger with Flux-Sauce or Andalouse (*there is no real menu, customers can customise their own burger.)

As the saying goes, if you have an idea or a dream you want to make reality, the USA is the place to be. But the American Dream is alive and well in northern Luxembourg, where our winning diner “Flux” is situated. Gregory Reinertz, himself half-American, decided to open a classic US-style diner at a petrol station on a country road, serving up the best burgers in the country.

When Greg, as he is known, was a child, he spent his summers in the US with his mother, where he developed a taste for a good burger from a young age.

“They make burgers like nowhere else. From a young age I had an entrepreneurial spirit, inherited from my father. So I always dreamed of opening an old-school diner.”
Gregory Reinertz (Flux)

While Bouneschlupp and Kniddelen were fine, Greg collected plenty of inspiration in the States, above all in terms of “burger innovation”. He felt strongly that Luxembourg could benefit from such an eatery, especially in the north, where he established a slice of America in Hierheck.

While Greg’s father always hoped to open a chip shop, he himself jumped at the chance to open his burger bar as soon as the opportunity arose. At Flux, the concentration is solely on the smash-burger, a very popular variant in the US. The burger patty is placed on the grill and then “smashed” flat under pressure, making it thin and extra crispy on the edges. And what’s more, customers can build their burgers themselves, choosing the bun, the meat, the sauce and toppings, all for a fair price. This combination is especially important for Flux’s founder and the diner’s success is a testament to this: since July, Greg has not only opened his second diner in Ettelbruck, but also a third in Bour over the last month. There are vague plans to open another diner in the capital, although nothing has been set in stone yet.

Combining high-quality local and regional products, such as Angus beef, with the lowest possible price, has been a successful concept with Luxembourgish customers, as well as garnering praise from abroad. The globally renowned Youtuber and rapper KSI even visited Flux last year:

Naturally, it is extremely important for Greg that the burger and topping quality remains high, day after day, without losing creativity when making the burgers.

In this edition of Readers’ Choice, Flux broke participation records, as a candidate has never before received so many nominations. Congratulations to the Flux team for their excellent work in achieving first place in our ranking.

2nd place: Urban

Opened: 2002 (kitchen opened in 2005)
Address: 2 Rue de la Boucherie, 1247 Ville-Haute Luxembourg
Contact: 23 66 84 06
Online: https://www.urban.lu
Most popular burger / signature burger: Smash-Burger and “Beast"-Burger

The Luxembourg City restaurant Urban has been serving its signature smash burgers since 2007, positioning itself ahead of a trend that would later sweep across Europe. This is a point of pride for co-founder Tom Hickey, whose establishment has been in operation since 2002.

“We smashed a lot of Burgers over the last 20 years and we did it, before it became a ‘trend’”
Tom Hickney, Mat-Grënner vum Urban

“Customers’ preferences also vary depending on the time of year,” Hickey told RTL. “Right now, it’s definitely the smash burger, but also ‘The Beast.’” The latter is a substantial burger topped with beef brisket that is slow-cooked continuously for 12 hours before serving.

Hickey, who comes from a family of butchers, emphasizes that quality meat is foundational. “Ideally, you need high-quality, local meat with a good ratio of meat to fat,” he stated. Urban’s patties are made from meat with a 15% fat content and seasoned only with pepper and salt, reflecting a philosophy of simplicity and quality over additives.

According to Hickey, the next most critical component is the bun. Urban produces its own Japanese-style potato buns in-house, using sweet potatoes to achieve a uniquely soft and tender texture that differs from a traditional brioche. This homemade bun, combined with Urban’s proprietary sauces, completes what Hickey describes as the perfect burger: a high-quality, hand-held experience where every element is carefully considered.

3rd place: A Bau

Opened: April 2019
Address: 1 Am Dueref, 7651 Heffingen
Contact: 26870706
Most popular burger / signature burger: Jalapeño Burger and Special Burger (with bacon and egg)
Online: Facebook Page

A meal at “A Bau” in Heffingen reveals the distinctive, alternative charm its owner, Martine Schmit, has long cultivated. Initially operating as a simple bar, the business faced a challenge attracting customers in the post-pandemic climate. Burgers emerged as a practical solution, as legislation classifies them as a permissible “snack”.

What began as an economic adaptation, however, evolved into a culinary passion. The burger menu expanded steadily, leading to a unique monthly tradition: a new, limited-edition burger is introduced at the start of each month and retired at its end.

Schmit attributes the bar’s strong showing in the Readers’ Choice ranking to a large and loyal base of regulars, many of whom have become personal friends. She also credits the product itself, emphasising the use of fresh ingredients and a creative yet balanced approach. “The burgers are creative but not so outlandish that they no longer taste good,” Schmit notes, adding that customers often serve as unofficial taste testers.

A successful example was last month’s special: a burger featuring Munster cheese and onion confit, which became the month’s top seller.

Despite opening just a year before the Covid-19 pandemic and weathering the subsequent slump, “A Bau” appears to have fully secured its local following. In a market saturated with burger options, Schmit’s bar has carved out a notable place, making its top-ten ranking a significant achievement.
