We chat with Ulrik Møller, a dad of three, about the school's approach, challenges, and key tips for parents.

Mom Life is a new parenting podcast dedicated to helping English speaking parents in Luxembourg. From crèches to crémant, we’ll cover everything you need to know about living your best life in the Grand Duchy.

In season 2 I’ll still be highlighting some great momprenuers and mom stories, but I’ll also be focusing a lot on schools here in Luxembourg. Specifically, the English language options.

Choosing the right school for your kid is one of the most important decisions you can make as an expat. It not only shapes their education which will influence their adult life and career, but also their culture, sense of belonging, and well-being (or lack thereof!). It is my goal this season to interview a parent from one of each of the English language options in the country.

And yes, even though the title of the show is Mom Life, dad's are absolutely welcome!

In fact, we’re kicking off Season 2 with our very first dad on the pod, Mr. Ulrik Møller! Ulrik Møller is, first and foremost, a proud dad of three daughters who attend ISML primary school. He is passionately committed to the future of Luxembourg, the country he calls home.

As President of the Parents Association at the International School Michel Lucius, he tirelessly advocates for an equitable and inclusive educational environment. A seasoned finance leader, Ulrik sits on global boards while running his own firms. Passionate about giving back and uniting people, he’s also at the helm of various cultural and civic bodies.

Ulrik and I sit down to talk about his experiences so far with Michel Lucius. Because he’s got three kids at the primary school, our conversation focuses mostly on the younger kids. However, we do talk about the overall curriculum as well.

Exploring ISML with Ulrik Moeller

If you’re just starting to consider Michel Lucius (ISML) for your child, here are the basics: It’s an “international local school” which means that it’s free and paid for by the Ministry of Education. The language of instruction is English, but they do teach French, German and Luxembourgish classes as a subject similar to math or art. They follow the Cambridge International Curriculum, which means eventually your kid would have to take the A Levels like they do in the UK.

It’s located in the city in Limpertsberg, although one day the plan is to move to Kirchberg. The other basic that you should know is that the traffic in the morning around that area of town is terrible. So while ISML is hugely popular, you should consider your morning commute when considering this school.

The hope is that you’ll get more out of this interview than what you could find on google or an online forum. It’s a candid one on one conversation about what’s working and what’s not with the school. Obviously this is just one parent’s opinion, so it’s all subjective, but I do hope you’ll find it helpful.

We touch on the school’s communication systems, their philosophy of teaching, special education support, day care and social emotional development.

If you’re considering ISML for your kids in the future or are curious about what it’s really like to go there – you’ll definitely want to tune in to this episode!
