Originally from Colombia, entrepreneur Alejandra Copete Borrero, who moved to Luxembourg three years ago, tells RTL Today how love led her to the Grand Duchy and how community, integration support, and entrepreneurship has helped her make it her home.

What brought you to Luxembourg and how long have you been living here?

Someone recently told me that people usually come to Luxembourg either for love for money or for real love, and that I was one of the lucky ones who came for real love.

My fiancé is Luxembourgish. We met 12 years ago in Munich during our studies, and after eight years of being friends, we decided to start a life together in 2023. I moved directly from Colombia to Luxembourg in May 2023, and it has truly become my home.

How did you find the experience of integrating as an expat in Luxembourg?

After living in several countries, I can say that Luxembourg has been genuinely welcoming. With people from all over the world living here, you do not feel alone for long.

Luxembourgish people have been supportive and encouraging of my integration. Being involved as a volunteer in different organisations also helped me feel connected and part of the community.

Initiatives like the CAI contract, a government integration programme that supports newcomers through language learning and cultural orientation in Luxembourg, and institutions such as ADEM helped me greatly, especially when creating my own business.

Do you think Luxembourg is an attractive place to live for families?

Yes, absolutely. Luxembourg offers economic stability, safety, strong social systems, many educational options, and a lot of nature. While housing can be expensive, the overall quality of life makes it a very attractive place for families.

What has been challenging about moving to the Grand Duchy?

The biggest challenge was the language barrier. Even with good English, not speaking French or Luxembourgish limited job opportunities at first. This motivated me to learn both languages, and today I feel proud to be able to present my brand in French while continuing to improve my Luxembourgish.

As an entrepreneur, how do you find being a small business owner in Luxembourg?

Being an entrepreneur in Luxembourg has been very rewarding. The opportunities are huge, as the country offers strong institutional support, clear structures, and many networking possibilities for entrepreneurs.

While the administrative process can feel complex at first, there is a lot of guidance available, making it a very favorable environment to build and grow a small business if you are motivated and proactive.

Through my brand, people connect deeply with our 100 percent pure and organic essential oils, trusting them for better sleep, hormonal and emotional balance, reduced anxiety, focus, and well-being for themselves or their loved ones.

As a family business producing in Colombia in partnership with indigenous communities and farmers, people here strongly support our ethical and human approach.

I have also created meaningful collaborations with locals and expats, including workshops with artists, athletes, health coaches, yoga instructors, physiotherapists, psychologists, and even dentists.

These collaborations have allowed me to share the ancestral benefits of essential oils extracted naturally from plants in a very authentic way.

Do you have any advice for newcomers who are at the beginning of their expat journey?

Take your time and stay open to meeting people. Learning the local languages step by step makes a big difference, both professionally and socially. Use the support systems available, participate in the community, and do not be afraid to ask for help. If anyone needs guidance, I would be more than happy to share my experience.
