As I write this, the weather outside is frightful. Chances are that when you’re reading this the weather outside will be frightful too! This is Luxembourg in the winter after all! I hear that the Germans say “there’s no such thing as bad weather, but only bad clothing.”
However, since I come from Southern California, I am going to go ahead and call out winter for what it is. Cold and wet!
I have three kids. They’re all born in Q4. Which means I am supposed to host three birthday parties at the end of the year, and there’s a 99% chance the weather will be bad for all of them. Certainly not good enough to go to a park, which in my mind is the cheapest and easiest thing to do for a child’s birthday party.
If you’re like me and your kids are born in the colder and wetter months, you might also be struggling for ideas on what to do for a birthday party. If so, this is the episode for you! And actually, even if your kids are summer babies but you just can’t face another weekend of the kids in front of a screen all day, this one is for you too.
Enter Maude Van Rymenant, my guest on the show this week. You may remember her from last season when she was my guest discussing everything you need to know about Summer Parks and Staycations here in Luxembourg. I’m thrilled to have her back on the show.
She’s also the mastermind behind the parenting Instagram and TikTok handles @you.are.family. If you haven’t checked out her page yet, it’s a treasure trove of fun weekend park recommendations and activities for families with young children.
As a parent, I understand the constant quest for kid-friendly activities that don’t break the bank or involve too much screen time. The joy of exploring city museums or indulging in art and hands-on science ensures the whole family stays entertained and enriched.
In this episode, Maude offers fantastic ideas for indoor birthday celebrations that cater to every need, from sporty activities to artsy themes. Choices vary from petting zoos at local farms to renting spaces with fun gym activities or arts and crafts.
The possibilities aren’t endless, but there are way more local and nearby options than I thought. If you’re like me, your kids are nothing alike, so we discuss finding the perfect fit for your budget and your child’s interests.
Highlights include ice skating at the Kockelscheuer and real-life Mario Kart at Battle Kart in Germany. Both would be a fit for a birthday party or just a random weekend day with nothing on the calendar. When we recorded the episode, I was just about to host a birthday party at Les Thermes.
If you’re interested in an indoor pool party, I can highly recommend it. We hosted 16 boys and I think they had a great, albeit exhausting time. The only thing I might mention is that 3 hours is a long time at the pool. When you reserve you might want to talk to them about shortening it to 2 or 2.5 hours all in.
Of course, if you want the full details on my son’s party and all the options Maude covers, you’ll have to tune into this enlightening episode! Please give it a listen and let me know what you think. And as always, if you have an idea for the show or are interested in being a guest yourself, please reach out.
