For some of Luxembourg's theatres, the new year starts with contemporary adaptations of timeless literary classics.
One of these classics is Russian author Anton Chekhov's play The Seagull, which has served as literary template for the modern American adaptation Stupid Fucking Bird. As of tomorrow, the tragicomedic play will be performed in Luxembourg's Théâtre des Capucins.
Are classics timeless? It is undeniable that many of the themes that lie at the heart of Chekhov's original are still relevant today. Among other things, the play delves into questions of love, art and personal fulfillment.
Director Anne Simon selected Aaron Posner's 2013 adaptation of the play. Both form and content of the original are decadently pushed to the extreme, which already manifests itself in the explicit title.
You can go see "Stupid Fucking Bird" until 23 January.
