Katie and Dillon from The Good Guy follow diverging paths – Katie becomes a feminist advocate, while Dillon embodies online radicalisation.
In a recent interview on The Sam Steen Show, Tony and Natacha, director and cast member from the upcoming play The Good Guy, discussed their roles and the powerful themes explored in the production. The play, written by Tony's daughter, Ferelith Kingston, is a timely exploration of online misogyny and the polarisation of young minds through social media.
Originally a monologue, the play has evolved into a full-length performance after extensive workshops in Dublin, expanding the scope of its message.
The central characters, Katie and Dillon, represent two contrasting journeys in the digital age. Katie, portrayed by Natacha, begins as a light-hearted TikTok creator who, after watching a TED Talk, becomes deeply passionate about feminism, marking a turning point in her character’s story.
On the other hand, Dillon's story is one of isolation and vulnerability, as he gradually falls into harmful ideologies through online gaming channels. While his initial intentions appear harmless, his descent into toxic communities reveals a broader societal issue – blaming women for personal frustrations.
Tony highlights that The Good Guy doesn't take a heavy-handed approach to condemning online misogyny but instead presents a nuanced exploration of the topic. The play avoids being overtly preachy and instead aims to reflect real-world dynamics and polarisation, similar to figures like Andrew Tate, who have garnered attention for promoting anti-women rhetoric.
Audiences will have an opportunity to engage further during a Q&A session after the Saturday performance, where the writer, cast, and audience members can discuss the play's themes in depth. With Friday’s show already sold out, those interested can still get tickets for Saturday and Sunday performances through the Neimënster website.
