The artistic heritage of one of the most iconic modern dancer-choreographer of the twentieth century will be incarnated on the stage of the Grand Theatre when the Martha Graham Dance company showcases masterpieces from Graham’s repertoire, for two performances on 3-4 February.
Janet Eilber, the company’s artistic director since 2015 will give the Luxembourg contemporary dance lovers a unique opportunity to take a deep dive into Martha Graham's creative world.
Te company's 18 dancers will be performing masterworks such as the "Dark Meadow Suite", inspired by the choreographer’s love of the Native American rituals, as well as the variations on the solo "Lamentation", a work representative of her exploration on raw gestures of contraction and release. Newly commissioned works by contemporary artists as well as Justin Scholar's film "90 years and 90 seconds" are also on the programme of the two scheduled performances.
"Dance is the hidden language of the soul"
Graham, who saw dance as “the hidden language of the soul, of the body”, has created more than 181 productions for which she was acclaimed and has received prestigious prizes.
The American dancer, who considered that the body could say what words could not, is regarded as having single-handedly defined contemporary dance. Merce Cunningham, Mikhail Baryschnikov and Rudolf Noureev are just but a few of the choreographers and dancers she is known to have inspired during her long-lasting artistic career.
