After years performing internationally with TUYS, Luxembourg musician Yann Gengler is embracing a new chapter as a solo artist, sharing insights on his debut project Sunny Gloom and the creative freedom it brings on The Sam Steen Show.
After years of playing to international crowds with TUYS, Luxembourg musician Yann Gengler is stepping into a new role, as a solo artist. On The Sam Steen Show this week, Yann opened up about Sunny Gloom, his first solo project, and the emotional and musical freedom that’s come with it.
The project taps into Gengler's grunge and garage rock roots, a sound that’s far removed from TUYS’ layered psych-pop. "When I was a teenager, 13 years old, I also played in another band called Only Two Sticks and we did more garage rock, grungy stuff, which TUYS obviously isn't", he told Sam. "And I kind of wanted to go back to that. It's like a grunge alternative project. It's a very vulnerable project, I would say.”
That sense of vulnerability runs through the debut single, Sunny Gloom, which dropped at the end of March. With metaphor-rich lyrics and a stripped-back production, the track offers a glimpse into an inner world shaped by tension, self-reflection and emotional release.
But Gengler isn’t planning to keep it a solo effort forever. He’s already thinking about how Sunny Gloom might grow once it hits the stage: "I'm looking for musicians, of course, like guitarists or bassists", he said. "And then figure out what's gonna happen if it's not just me recording the parts, but also, like, seeing with other musicians what their input could be, like, to transform this thing that’s just recordings into a live thing."
With TUYS also in the middle of a big year, a new EP just released and a hometown headline show at Rotondes coming up on 2 May, Sunny Gloom feels like a bold new chapter for one of Luxembourg’s most prolific musicians.
