Julie Odell, the New Orleans based singer songwriter, has made her long awaited return with Orioles Eating Oranges, a tender and introspective new single released through the Frenchkiss label.
It is her first new music since the 2022 debut album Autumn Eve, and once again she draws inspiration from the everyday. The song was sparked by a family trip to Indiana just before the pandemic, when Odell watched children spending entire days outside, reminding her of her own childhood.
That image of freedom and playfulness became the centre of the track. The arrangement is understated but vivid, with Odell’s voice carried by acoustic tones and subtle atmospherics. It has the same intimacy and dreamlike pull that runs through her earlier work, but with a sharper focus on detail and mood.
Odell grew up in a creative household and spent her early years moving between art fairs and festivals with her family. That sense of observation and immersion in colour and texture has always been part of her songwriting, and it is felt clearly here.
Orioles Eating Oranges is available now on all major streaming platforms.
