Last week, the Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA) dominated the national sports press awards, with Patrizia van der Weken and Ruben Querinjean named Athletes of the Year.

The traditional FLA Awards ceremony took place on Saturday 6 December 2025 at The Coque, recognising achievements across Luxembourg athletics, from the athletes themselves to coaches, clubs, volunteers, as well partners.

Ruben Querinjean, who had remained relatively unknown before his breakthrough win in the 3,000-metre steeplechase at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels, was named Sportsman of the Year. The athlete, who holds both Luxembourgish and Belgian nationality, has seen his public profile grow in recent weeks, following appearances at his club CAL SPORA Luxembourg’s (CSL) 25th anniversary event, the Luxembourg sports press gala, and, finally, at the FLA Awards, where he was showered with accolades.

Querinjean is set to compete next weekend at the European Cross Country Championships. During an interview, he acknowledged that learning Luxembourgish could help him better integrate into the country’s sporting scene.

With Ruben Querinjean named Sportsman of the Year, Arnaud Starck named Best Coach and Patrizia van der Weken named Sportswoman of the Year, the strength of Luxembourg athletics was on full display during the awards ceremony.

Patrizia van der Weken was also voted Athlete of the Year by the Athletics Federation. She was unable to attend Saturday’s ceremony due to a training camp abroad. The sprinter is eagerly expected to return for the international indoor meeting at The Coque on 18 January, which marked the start of a strong season last year. Uyana Granger and Damien Pechon received awards as “Nouwesstalent” or Promising Talents of the Year. In fact, many impressive achievements were recorded in the youth categories.

During the event, Charel Grethen was honoured for his exemplary 27-year career with a framed photograph and a piece of tartan from the Tokyo track, where he was a finalist in the 1,500 metres at the Olympic Games. The federation however chose not to disclose how it obtained the piece of the Olympic track.
