Health authorities have again confirmed the presence of the Asian tiger mosquito in Bonnevoie, following routine inspections carried out by the Health Directorate's sanitary inspection team. The mosquito, which can transmit diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya, has become an increasing concern across Europe, including in the region around Luxembourg.
In neighbouring France, cases of both illnesses are reported every summer.
According to the Health Directorate, the mosquito has been detected in Bonnevoie several times since 2023. Its regular presence could indicate it is now established in the area.
In response, the sanitary inspection will provide residents with information on Wednesday on how to prevent further spread. Inspectors will go door-to-door in the area around Kaltreis Park in Bonnevoie between 4 and 8pm to speak with residents, after the mosquito was detected in this zone.
Asian tiger mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water near homes, even in very small amounts. The Health Directorate recommends that any containers in which water may collect should be emptied at least once a week and, if possible, covered to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
Drains and gutters should remain unobstructed, and containers capable of collecting water should be stored indoors. The use of mosquito nets on windows or over beds is also advised.
