Those seeking to improve their fitness as part of their New Year’s resolutions could find the solution in one of the new trails opening at
Bambësch this month. The three circuits, each 10 kilometres long, are differentiated by their elevation and subsequent difficulty. The easiest, signposted in blue, has a difference in height along the route of around 145 metres. The red trail has an elevation of 138 metres, and the black 168 metres. “The black trail is the most difficult, it will require some stamina to complete,” says
José Llamas Luna, who is responsible for Luxembourg City’s trails. “The red is ok and the blue one is easy, perfect for families.” Very sporty people might choose to combine all three trails and run or walk up to 30 kilometres.
The starting points are the car parks around the forest, including Laftreff/Batterie/Spora, Juegdschlass, Maison B, Siwweburen, Kaleknapp and Bridel. Those who are familiar with the Bambësch might also be able to identify them by the signs, such as rabbit, fox, maple or owl. When asked why there were new trails and signs through the woods, Luxembourg City alderman Maurice Bauer explained: “We received demands to make more inter-connecting, expansive trails. The trails already existed, we’ve just created a new circuit out of the paths.” In 2022, members of the public visiting the Bambësch were asked for their opinions on what was missing. Previously, the longest circuits were just 5 kilometres long.
The new trails incorporate some of the forest’s most attractive walking routes. “There are no motorways. Just narrow paths, with plenty of variation and nature. We wanted walkers to really be able to appreciate what a lovely forest we have here in the city,” explained José Llamas Luna.
In order to avoid getting lost, a Luxembourgish start-up has launched the app LetzTrail for walking routes.
