After being dismissed without stated cause, Luxembourg international footballer Maurice Deville took legal action against his former club Swift Hesperange, with a court in December siding with the player and ordering the club to pay Deville €253,890.07. The sum corresponds to the 23 months that had remained on the player’s contract, including both material and non-material damages.

Swift must also cover legal costs.

Deville, who currently plays for Jeunesse Canach, in 2022 signed both a permanent employment contract (CDI) and a four-year player contract with Swift Hesperange. While the player contract defined the sporting duration of the agreement, the CDI regulated the formal employment relationship between the player and the club.

In 2023, the 33-year-old striker with 61 international caps won the league title with Swift.

Responding to RTL’s enquiry, Deville confirmed the ruling but refrained from detailed comment until the case is fully settled: “I can indeed confirm that this is the ruling at first instance. Hesper has appealed. And that is why I would like to wait for the outcome before commenting further. My lawyers will handle the rest”, he stated.

Contacted by RTL, Swift president Fernand Laroche declined to comment on the substance of the case but confirmed that the club has appealed the decision. In recent years, Swift Hesperange has faced recurring scrutiny over its financial situation, including several transfer bans imposed by UEFA.
