Luxembourgish professional cyclist Kevin Geniets (Groupama–FDJ) experienced a traumatic fall at the Clásica San Sebastián in early August.
The professional cyclist lost all memory of the moment due to the impact of the fall on his head.
"It was one of the worst falls of my career", he said.
Geniets suffered a mild concussion and a bruised shoulder in the fall, requiring further treatment and examinations, but a scan and X-rays revealed no serious injury.
"We spent the night in a hotel instead of flying straight home, but after 24 hours I was slowly feeling better."
Once back home in Annecy, Geniets began gentle training on an exercise bike after around three days. If all goes well, he hopes to return to the road on Saturday.
Roads resurfaced for major events
Geniets says he found the fall difficult to process on an emotional level.
"It's the first time I have no memory of a fall. In the beginning, it scared me a little. But we have such a good team of staff, who immediately took care of me and have plenty of experience with these things. The evolution looks good now though."
For major events such as the Tour de France, many roads are resurfaced. In this particular race in northern Spain, there was a large hole in the road, which should not have been allowed to be an issue. At the very least, it should have been marked, says Geniets. "But it is common, unfortunately, to have roads in poor condition."
A satisfying season so far
If Geniets' health permits, he is planning to participate in the Tour du Limousin, the Bretagne Classic in Plouay, and several races in Canada.
To date, he says it has been a satisfying season.
"The start was successful, I was able to do well in the Ardennes. The Giro went well for me too. After the championship I was on good form in the Tour de Wallonie as well, until my fall."
