Fans of Luxembourg's national football team had planned on chartering a plane to Georgia at the end of March to see the Red Lions attempt to qualify for this year's Euros, but the plan could not take flight due to budget constraints.
The Luxembourg national team will play their most important match in Luxembourg sports history in Georgia at the end of March as part of the UEFA Euro Qualifiers, a victory bringing them one step closer to competing in the competition.
In order to get as many supporters as possible to Tbilisi conveniently and quickly, the Luxembourg Football Federation had organised a charter flight, but it failed because not all participants had paid the fee upfront.
The two fan clubs of the Luxembourg national team, M-Block and Compadres Tridefa, wanted to organise a flight themselves.
The "Compadres" paid 523 euros for the flight. A ticket for the FLF charter flight would have cost 495 EUR, including the ticket. M-Block even tried to set up a charter flights itself, but the project failed.
"The charter flights are extremely expensive. 100,000 euros are requested. This amount must be paid immediately and we could not get the amount together, hence it was cancelled," said Bob Gebele.
Supporters are now planning on getting to the match themselves, travelling through different transit routes, hoping to arrive on time.
With recent cancellations and strikes, the charter flight would have been the most direct and safest option.
The FLF had to gather 170 people for the charter flight, but also only 100 of them paid, the federation was left with no other choice than the cancel the charter.
The national football team will play the match in Georgia on 21 March at 6pm Luxembourg time.
