The FLF planned to fly Luxembourg supporters to Georgia for the national team's playoff match next month, but the chartered flight has now been cancelled.
Luxembourg's national football team will play their biggest ever match at the end of March, as they seek to qualify for this summer's European championships in Germany. If they can win against Georgia in Tbilisi, they'll face either Greece or Kazakhstan at the Stade de Luxembourg a few days later in the final qualification game.
In order to guarantee support for the Red Lions abroad, the FLF had organised a charter flight with Luxair to take as many fans as possible to Georgia on 21 March. Anticipation for the flight was high, with 170 seats reserved, but only 100 supporters ended up paying for their tickets. As a result, the decision was taken to cancel the flight.
The FLF received criticism for their handling of the situation and organisation of the flight. Although a deposit was proposed for supporters wishing to take the flight, in the end, only those who paid the full amount ended up being the ones who paid anything at all.
The federation's hopes of bringing a great atmosphere to get behind the Luxembourg team have duly been dashed. The FLF told RTL they regretted that it had come to the cancellation of the flight, but that they had been left with no choice due to non-payment.
