Stage 2 of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, spanning 183.9 kilometres from Mondorf-les-Bains to Mamer amid heavy downpour, featured three hills and offered opportunities for cyclists to earn points towards the mountain jersey.
Early in the race, a breakaway group emerged, with Luxembourg's own Mats Wenzel leading the charge in pursuit of mountain-jersey points. While Wenzel did secure points on the climbs, he later regrouped with the peloton following the Marienthalerhof ascent. This strategic move likely aimed to conserve energy for future stages, enabling him to accumulate more mountain-jersey points. Subsequently, four cyclists maintained their lead, enjoying a roughly 50-second advantage over the chasing peloton with approximately 35 kilometres remaining. The Bora team set the pace to support their sprinter's chances of victory as the race unfolded.
However, around 30 kilometres from the finish, the cyclists were subjected to a heavy downpour. The adverse weather conditions played against the breakaway group, and their lead eventually dwindled. In the closing kilometres, riders jostled for prime positions within the peloton to mitigate the risk of accidents caused by the inclement weather. As the race reached the final one-kilometre mark, the sprint showdown commenced, with Belgian cyclist Jenthe Biermans clinching the stage win. Following this stage, the yellow jersey now adorns the shoulders of Dane Søren Kragh Andersen.
In the ongoing battle for the mountains jersey, Mats Wenzel leads with a total of 20 points, maintaining a nine-point lead over second-placed Lennert Teugels.
