Stage 1 of the 2026 Tour de France will feature two major firsts. For the first time ever, the Tour de France will start in Barcelona. In addition, the opening stage will be a team time trial, featuring a new format: on the technically demanding course from the harbour past the city's main tourist attractions and up to the Olympic hill, every rider will be credited with their own individual finishing time.
The 19.6-kilometre time trial concludes with two climbs: the Côte de Montjuïc (1.1 kilometres at 5.1%) and the Côte du Stade Olympique (800 metres at 7%).
The new time trial format is also expected to have a significant impact on team tactics. Many teams will likely keep their riders working as domestiques for their team leaders for as long as possible. The captains could then set off on their own from the first climb all the way to the finish.
