Known for her deadpan delivery, razor-sharp observations and formidable guitar playing, Barnett has spent more than a decade turning the small details of everyday life into some of alternative rock's most memorable songs.
Now she's back with her fourth studio album, Creature of Habit, and a new collection of songs exploring change, uncertainty and the challenge of getting out of your own way.
Barnett first attracted international attention with 2013's The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, introducing listeners to her conversational songwriting and distinctive approach to guitar-driven indie rock.
Her breakthrough came two years later with Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, an album that earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Songs including "Pedestrian at Best", "Depreston" and "Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go to the Party" established Barnett as a songwriter with a particular talent for finding humour, frustration and unexpected poignancy in ordinary situations.
She followed that success with 2018's Tell Me How You Feel and the more introspective Things Take Time, Take Time in 2021.
Along the way, she's performed at major festivals including Glastonbury, Coachella, Primavera and Lollapalooza.
Barnett's latest album, Creature of Habit, was recorded in Joshua Tree and Los Angeles, with a creative process that favoured instinct over extensive planning.
The record finds her exploring transformation, uncertainty and the little revelations that come from paying attention to what's happening around you.
There's still plenty of the driving guitar work and dry humour that made her name, but the new material also reflects a more compassionate approach to navigating life's changes.
It's another chapter in a career that has consistently balanced loud, scrappy rock songs with quieter, more reflective moments.
Barnett has also worked with some familiar names along the way, including American singer-songwriter Kurt Vile.
The pair released their collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice in 2017, bringing together two musicians with similarly laid-back vocal styles and a shared love of guitar-driven songwriting.
The album featured tracks including "Over Everything" and "Continental Breakfast", and remains a favourite among fans of both artists.
