TRAIN DISRUPTION – CFL has reported a points failure in the Kautenbach area this morning. As a result, rail services on the line between Luxembourg City and Gouvy, as well as between Luxembourg City and Diekirch, are disrupted. Teams are working on site to resolve the issue, with services expected to gradually resume from 8am.

DEADLY ACCIDENT A head-on collision involving two cars yesterday afternoon on the N15 between Heiderscheid and the slip road to the tunnel towards Esch-sur-Sûre has resulted in the death of a 77-year-old woman, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. A second person was airlifted to hospital by Luxembourg Air Rescue.

DEFENCE BONDS – Luxembourg’s Defence Bonds have sold out at three of five banks within hours of yesterday’s launch. The government’s €150 million bond offers investors a 2.25% return over three years with no withholding tax. Spuerkeess, Raiffeisen, and BGL BNP Paribas have exhausted their allocations, BIL and Banque de Luxembourg still had bonds available yesterday evening. The Finance Minister noted that over €33 billion currently sit in Luxembourg savings accounts, helping explain the strong demand.

LUXEMBOURG PASSPORT – The latest Henley Passport Index has ranked the Luxembourgish passport joint third globally, for its visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 187 destinations worldwide. Luxembourg shares this position with Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, and Sweden. Singapore tops the rankings with Japan and South Korea in joint second place.

World

TRUMP PEACE PRIZE MEDAL – Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump at the White House, thanking him for the military operation that removed Nicolás Maduro from power. Trump said it was a wonderful gesture of mutual respect.

MARTIAL LAW CASE – A South Korean judge sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday to five years in prison for obstructing justice and other charges linked to his disastrous martial law declaration and in its chaotic aftermath. The sentence is the first in a series of verdicts for the disgraced ex-leader, who faces the death penalty if found guilty of insurrection in another upcoming trial.

GERMANY CAR ATTACK TRIAL An Afghan man goes on trial in Germany today accused of ramming a car into a crowd in Munich last year, killing a two-year-old girl and her mother and injuring dozens. The suspect, partially identified as Farhad N., faces two charges of murder and 44 of attempted murder, with prosecutors saying he acted out of a “religious motivation” and expected to die in the attack.

NATO GREENLAND – A small number of European troops and vessels from European NATO allies have arrived in Greenland. The limited deployment involves Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK. US press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that she did not believe that troops in Europe would impact President Trump’s goal of the acquisition of Greenland at all.

EUROVISION TOUR – The first official Eurovision Song Contest Live Tour to mark the competition’s 70th anniversary has been announced. The tour will visit ten cities across Europe this summer, featuring iconic performers from seven decades of Eurovision alongside 10 of this year’s artists. It follows the record sell-out of tickets for the Vienna contest in May.

CYCLING – Cycling’s most prestigious race, the Tour de France, will begin in 2027 by showcasing the beauty of the Scottish Borders and England’s Lake District, organisers have revealed. The first three stages of the 2027 Grand Boucle will take place in Britain, starting in Scotland before moving through England and into Wales.

FOOTBALL – In the German Bundesliga, Augsburg and Union Berlin drew 1-1. In the Copa del Rey in Spain, Valencia won 2-0 against Burgos, Barcelona also beat Racing 2-0.

Former UEFA boss Michel Platini says FIFA president Gianni Infantino “has become more of an autocrat” and is too interested in the rich and powerful, in an interview with The Guardian on Thursday. Infantino was Platini’s deputy from 2009 and 2015 when the Frenchman headed European football’s governing body.

Weather

The day will be mostly cloudy throughout, with the sky perhaps brightening briefly later on. While it won’t be completely grey all day, there is likely to be light rain especially during the morning and early afternoon.

Temperatures will stay above zero, with morning lows around 6–8°C and afternoon highs of 8–10°C expected.
