Luxembourg rules out adding femicide to criminal code

Luxembourg will not follow Italy in creating a standalone femicide crime, with Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue confirming existing laws are sufficient.

The decision means gender-based killings will continue to be prosecuted under current homicide laws that already allow for doubled sentences when gender motives are proven and carry a sentence of life imprisonment.

Minister Margue argued that creating a separate femicide offence could conflict with constitutional equality principles, while MPs Diane Adehm and Nathalie Morgenthaler had asked whether Luxembourg would follow Italy’s approach.
