ARCELOR-MITTAL JOBS – Luxembourg’s largest trade unions, the OGBL and the LCGB have urged Prime Minister Frieden to call a tripartite meeting as over a thousand jobs at Arcelor-Mittal face potential relocation. The unions have written to Prime Minister Frieden calling for greater transparency regarding the company’s future plans. The trade unions also criticise ambiguities in the negotiations for a new agreement between the state and the steel giant.

BABY FORMULA RECALLS – Following recent cases, parliament unanimously adopted a motion calling for better communication on baby formula recalls yesterday afternoon. The government has been urged to create a complete list of recalled products and examine whether the LU-Alert app could issue food warnings.

NATO UKRAINE – NATO defence ministers meet in Brussels today to discuss military aid for Ukraine and strengthening European defence. Luxembourg’s Defence Minister Yuriko Backes confirmed the country will provide at least 100 million euros to Ukraine this year, bringing total support since the Russian invasion to over half a billion euros.

World

EU SUMMIT – EU leaders are meeting at Belgium’s Alden Biesen castle today to tackle Europe’s weak productivity growth and competitiveness. Views differ on responding to US tariffs and Chinese competition, with Germany favouring less bureaucracy while France wants European companies prioritised in public contracts. Luxembourg’s prime minister Luc Frieden is attending the summit.

CANADA SHOOTING – Canadian police have identified the perpetrator of Tuesday’s mass shooting in a remote mining town as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a transgender woman with known mental health issues. Van Rootselaar killed her mother and stepbrother before shooting six people dead at a school she’d left four years earlier. Police say the motive remains unknown. The shooter took her own life.

TRUMP CLIMATE – President Trump plans to overturn regulations classifying greenhouse gases as unhealthy, removing emission limits on cars and power plants. The White House argues these restrictions cause economic damage, particularly to car manufacturers.

LUFTHANSA STRIKELufthansa pilots and cabin crew are striking today over pension rights and collective agreements, causing widespread flight cancellations across Germany. The strike affects Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and City-Line, though normal schedules should resume tomorrow.

BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL – The Berlin Film Festival opens tonight with a focus on artistic freedom. Iranian-Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat’s “No Good Men” launches the programme. The festival’s opening ceremony will honour Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2023 for “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”.

FOOTBALL Bayern Munich reached the German Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Leipzig, their first semi-final appearance since 2020. In the Premier League, Liverpool edged Sunderland 1-0, Aston Villa remain top after beating Brighton 1-0, Manchester City beat Fulham 3-0 and Liverpool won 1-0 against Sunderland.

OLYMPICS French ice dancer Guillaume Cizeron has made history with a second Olympic gold medal, four years after his victory with Gabriella Papadakis. Meanwhile, French biathlete Julia Simon won the 15-kilometre title, three months after receiving a suspended prison sentence. Today’s medal events include: Men’s moguls, Women’s Super-G, Women’s cross-country 10km interval, Men’s snowboard cross, Women’s speed skating 5000m, Mixed Luge team relay, Women’s snowboard halfpipe , Women’s 500m and men’s 1000m short track.
