Following the announcement of a major restructuring by ArcelorMittal in Europe, Luxembourg’s trade unions are calling on the Prime Minister to convene a tripartite meeting for the steel sector.
The restructuring plans, revealed last week, came as a shock. In Luxembourg, up to 1,050 jobs could be relocated.
According to ArcelorMittal management, a feasibility study is currently underway. In response, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) have sent a letter – dated 5 February and reviewed by RTL – to Prime Minister Frieden. In it, the unions urge him to organise a tripartite meeting dedicated to the steel industry.
While the current Lux2030 agreement, which defines the group’s strategic direction, has been extended until 31 March, the unions are calling for greater transparency regarding the company’s future plans. They insist that the Prime Minister take personal charge of the matter in order to safeguard affected jobs and preserve Luxembourg’s steel industry.
