FINDEL AIRPORT FUTURE – Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies has debated the airport’s long-term future. With Findel Airport planning one billion euros in investments and passenger numbers continuing to grow, Transport Minister Yuriko Backes said the current site will reach capacity limits by 2060, potentially requiring a new location.

SOCIAL MEDIA SURVEY– A new survey shows most young people in Luxembourg believe social media harms their well-being. Over half of those aged 17 to 30 reported negative effects, despite a third admitting they spend four or more hours daily on such platforms.

CORRUPTION INDEX – Luxembourg has dropped three spots to 8th in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index. The decline reflects a record-low global average, with several established democracies also slipping backwards.

World

CANADA SCHOOL SHOOTING – At least nine people have died in a mass shooting at a high school in western Canada. Police say a woman opened fire at the school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, before taking her own life. At least two others are in hospital with serious injuries, and as many as 25 people are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the “horrific” shooting.

EU DEFENCE MINISTERS MEETING – EU defence ministers are meeting today in Brussels, chaired by foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. They will discuss military support for Ukraine, defence innovation, and the bloc’s security outlook for 2026. Ukraine’s Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is expected to attend as well as Luxembourg’s Defence Minister Yuriko Backes.

US ISRAEL MEETING Benjamin Netanyahu meets Donald Trump at the White House today to urge a harder line on Iran’s nuclear programme. The Israeli Prime minister brought forward his visit following US-Iran held talks in Oman last week.

UKRAINE WAR – Four people, including three children, have been killed in Russian attacks near Kharkiv in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia reports Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure in the Volgograd region, sparking a major fire at southern Russia’s largest oil refinery. No casualties were reported there.

LUFTHANSA STRIKE – Air traffic disruption is expected tomorrow as pilots and cabin crew at Lufthansa go on strike. All flights departing from German airports will be affected. The industrial action centres on disputes over company pensions and a redundancy plan.

Sport

AMERICAN FOOTBALL – The Seattle Seahawks are holding a victory parade through downtown Seattle today, celebrating their Super Bowl triumph over the New England Patriots, with festivities concluding at the Seattle Center.

OLYMPICS – At the Winter Olympics today, medal events include the men’s Super-G, women’s biathlon, men’s speed skating 1000 metres, and figure skating ice dance. Women’s moguls, men’s Nordic combined, and luge doubles are also on the schedule.

FOOTBALL – In the German Cup Freiburg beat Hertha Berlin 5-4 on penalties. Today, Bayern play Leipzig. In the Premier League last night Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-1, Chelsea and Leeds drew 2-2 and West Ham and Manchester United drew 1-1.
