Something unusual is happening in warfare.
Within a few years, drones have moved from the margins of military operations to the centre of conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh, Ukraine, South Asia and the Middle East. But this revolution did not arrive in a single moment.
Over four decades, successive conflicts have revealed a different capability of the same technology. Each battlefield has revealed something new. We may only now be discovering what all those lessons mean together.
The drone story arguably begins over Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.
Israel had been developing unmanned aircraft for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes. During the 1982 Lebanon War, it integrated drones with intelligence, electronic warfare and manned aircraft against Syria's formidable air-defence network.
The revolutionary idea was not to replace the fighter aircraft but to make everything around it more effective.
A drone could observe enemy positions, help expose air defences and relay information without putting a pilot at an equivalent risk. The drone, thus, became an enabler for the conventional force.
America added something important to the drone concept: A weapon.
What began primarily as an intelligence and surveillance platform, once armed with Hellfire missiles, became an apex killing machine.
The War on Terror demonstrated that in Afghanistan when it unleashed its payload on the Taliban. Many civilians died too in what was later infamously termed as "collateral damage".
Drones could remain above an area for hours, track individuals and strike without exposing a pilot.
Israel had turned the drone into an eye. America gave that eye a gun.
But there was an important limitation. The United States was using drones largely against opponents unable to seriously contest American control of the skies. The bigger test would come when drones entered conventional warfare between states.
This breakthrough happened dramatically in Nagorno-Karabakh, a conflict widely described in international media and military analysis as the "democratisation of precision warfare".
Azerbaijan combined Turkish drones, Israeli loitering munitions and conventional forces against Armenian armour, artillery, air defences and fortified positions. Images of vehicles being destroyed from above travelled around the world.
But the deeper lesson wasn't simply that drones could destroy tanks. It was that precision warfare was becoming cheaper. Capabilities once associated with wealthy militaries possessing sophisticated aircraft, sensors and precision weapons were becoming accessible to considerably smaller powers.
Azerbaijan demonstrated the democratisation of precision warfare to devastating effect.
Two years later, Ukraine would take that lesson much further.
Russia entered Ukraine with enormous conventional advantages in armour, artillery, aircraft and manpower. Ukraine could never match the Russian war machine.
But it didn't have to. It had drones.
Commercial quadcopters became reconnaissance aircraft. FPV drones became precision weapons. Long-range drones attacked targets hundreds of kilometres into Russian territory. Sea drones threatened Russia's Black Sea Fleet.
Increasingly, military hardware costing millions found itself hiding from machines costing a fraction of its price.
If Azerbaijan had shown that drones could destroy conventional forces, Ukraine demonstrated that drones could constrain conventional superiority itself.
Tanks did not become obsolete. Neither did artillery or infantry. But moving and concentrating them became considerably more dangerous.
The drone had become an equaliser. It allowed a much weaker force to bring parity with a far bigger and conventionally superior military power.
If one was thinking that drones had achieved everything a modern war machine was required to do, they were about to enter perhaps an even more dangerous environment.
India and Pakistan are both nuclear powers. Their 2025 confrontation began with conventional strikes and one of the largest air battles in decades. Drones subsequently crossed the border in significant numbers while both sides attempted to intercept them and control the wider escalation.
This revealed another characteristic of unmanned warfare.
A state could now project force across a border without sending a single soldier across it or risking pilots.
Drones could now provide rivals with another rung on the escalation ladder, a means of employing limited military force without immediately escalating towards a much larger war or breaching the nuclear threshold.
Drone warfare demonstrated that it could act as an escalation valve without risking a full-scale war.
The latest confrontation has revealed another dimension: Cost asymmetry.
A relatively inexpensive drone can force its opponent to use much more expensive air-defence equipment to detect, track and destroy it.
The defender may successfully intercept the incoming weapon but will still face an uncomfortable question: How much did it cost to shoot down something so cheap?
If inexpensive attacking drones repeatedly consume expensive interceptors, aircraft sorties and air-defence capacity, technological superiority alone may no longer determine who is winning the exchange.
The attacker does not necessarily need the better machine, it merely needs enough machines to bleed its opponent by a thousand cuts.
War, thus, becomes an economic equation.
However, after more than four decades of drone development, the lessons are showing a paradox.
Military technology does not start wars. Industrialisation did not assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Leaders did.
Technology changes something subtler: the calculation inside the mind of the person deciding whether war is worth the risk.
Drones appear to be changing that calculation in two opposite directions.
As an offensive weapon, the drone makes force cheaper to project. It carries no pilot. It can cross a border without an army following it. It can loiter, strike and be sacrificed. Increasingly, it can be produced in large numbers. That lowers the cost of attacking another country.
But Ukraine has demonstrated the other side of the equation.
The same inexpensive machine can watch roads, hunt armour, locate artillery and attack supply lines. A weaker country no longer needs to match an invader tank for tank or aircraft for aircraft. It can deploy drones to make every movement painfully expensive.
The Drone Age has, therefore, raised the cost of invading another country.
And therein lies the drone paradox: Drones are simultaneously making attack cheaper but conquest more expensive.
Perhaps that will produce a strange new form of deterrence. States may still exchange blows, but invading and occupying another country could become so costly that wars remain limited.
Or perhaps cheaper attacks will create precisely the opposite world. States become increasingly willing to use force because each individual strike appears cheap, remote and controllable until it isn't.
The Archduke was not killed by technology. A man pulled the trigger. Leaders subsequently determined what happened after that trigger was pulled.
More than a century later, leaders face another similar calculation.
The question is, therefore, not simply whether these machines can destroy. We already know the answer.
The more consequential question is: Will drones make the next war too difficult to win or too easy to start?
