Preacher – Amazon
Jesse Custer, a preacher in Annville, Texas, has a mysterious past and starts having doubts about his faith. When his ex-girlfriend Tulip arrives asking him to do a heist with her, he refuses, telling her he has left that life behind, although he isn’t above dispensing his own – violent – brand of justice to the abusive husband of one of his churchgoers. While subduing the husband and his friends he meets vampire Cassidy.
Meanwhile, an unknown entity crosses the galaxy to Earth, entering a preacher in Africa, causing him to explode. When the entity continues its travels, it ends up inhabiting Jesse. Jesse finds out that he is possessed by Genesis, a child of an angel and a demon, which gives him the ability to control people.
At first delighted by this power he soon finds out that telling people what to do is not the solution to humanity’s problems. So instead he starts looking for God.
“Preacher” – the comic – was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and first published by Vertigo in 1995. Stephen King apparently said that his “Gunslinger” comic book series was influenced by it.
“Preacher” – the series – was adapted for television by, amongst others, Seth Rogen and started airing in 2016 on AMC. The show, with its often absurd and wacky humor, a certain irreverence towards religion and a special “look” sticks close to its source material, describing Jesse’s hunt for God.
“Preacher” is available on Amazon.
