WOLF CONFIRMED - Following the recent incident where a sheep was killed in the Lieler area, experts have verified the presence of a wolf in the region. The traces found on the carcass were analysed and genetic testing confirmed that the predator responsible for the attack was indeed a wolf, with a 100% match.

SURPRISE BIRTH - A Luxembourgish woman has given birth in a national park in Croatia. According to Croatian media, the young woman was unaware of her pregnancy. Reports say she started to feel labour pains during the hiking tour and ended up giving birth to the baby in a public toilet. Emergency teams arrived at the scene during the last stage of labour, later helping to transport both the mother and child to the canyon entrance, where they were transferred to hospital. Hospital checks revealed the baby to be full-term, healthy and weighing around 3.3 kilograms.

RESTAURANTS ON TV - Five restaurants in the Luxembourg have been selected to appear on the popular German cookery show “Mein Lokal, dein Lokal”. Each episode will see one restaurant hosting the owners of the other four for a three-course meal, with points awarded for the food and the service.The featured restaurants are Brasserie Abtei in the Grund, “TEMPO” in Clausen, the “Um Eck” brasserie in Hostert, “Wäistuff Leuck” in Lenningen and “Savory” in Grevenmacher. The restaurant which receives the most points at the end of the show’s run will be crowned the winner, receiving the “Golden Plate” award and €3,000 in prize money.

FUEL PRICE - Fuel prices continue to climb for the third time in a week. Super unleaded (98) petrol jumps up by 2.5 cents per litre from today, costing €1.879 per litre, while diesel will now cost €1.573 per litre - a 3.6 cent increase.Heating oil will also go up in price, as 10ppm rises by 4.2 cents to €1.026 per litre.

World

TRUMP INDICTMENT - The former US President Donald Trump is to appear in court on Thursday, charged with 4 new criminal offences relating to allegations that he tried to change the result of the 2020 presidential election. The Department of Justice’s special counsel Jack Smith said he would seek a speedy trial, so that its evidence can be tested. He said the charges included conspiring to defraud the United States and disenfranchise voters. Trump, who is already facing criminal charges, relating to his handling of classified documents and falsifying business records has described the latest charges as “election interference” and reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

NIGER EVACUATIONS - The first of 3 French planes, sent to evacuate European citizens from Niger, following last week’s military coup has arrived back in Paris with more than 250 people onboard. According to the Foreign Ministry, three people with Luxembourgish passports among the evacuated. A second French plane is waiting at the airport in Niger’s capital Niamey.

VOYAGER 2 COMMUNICATION - NASA has received a signal from the Voyager 2 probe, days after it was accidentally cut off from all communication. A mistake left the spacecraft, which is now nearly 20 billion kilometres from the earth, pointing in the wrong direction to receive commands. This left it unable to transmit data or receive commands to its mission control -- a situation that was not expected to be resolved until it conducted an automated re-orientation manoeuvre on October 15.

HEAVY METAL MUD - Driving rain, rivers of mud and traffic jams in northern Germany have led organisers of Wacken Open Air, billed as the world’s biggest heavy metal festival, to ask fans to stay away. Organisers of the festival, set to kick off today, say weather forecasts show the downpour will continue, with electrical storms possible, leading them to take the precautionary measures without calling off the event entirely. Bands including Britain’s Iron Maiden, US thrash metal act Megadeth and folk punk group Dropkick Murphys are among the headliners this year.

FOOTBALL - Swift Hesperange is in the third round of the qualification for the Europa Conference League after beating Welsh champions New Saints last night. They now face FC Struga from North Macedonia next Thursday. Tonight F91 Dudelange will play against Gzira United from Malta.

At the Women’s World Cup, today is the finale in groups F and G. Argentina meets Sweden and Italy plays against South Africa this morning. At 12 o’clock, France is playing against Panama and Brazil takes on Jamaica.

And Bayern Munich striker Sadio Mane has signed for the Saudi club Al Nassr. The Senegalese international is the latest high profile player to join the cash-rich Saudi league and will link up with Cristiano Ronaldo. German media estimates the transfer at around 30 million euros with an annual salary for Mane of 40 million plus 10 million in results-based bonuses.

Weather

Luxembourg’s national weather service, Météolux, has issued a yellow alert for heavy showers expected today. The forecast indicates a spell of substantial rain, with cumulative rainfall reaching up to 25 litres/m². The yellow alert is in effect from 4am to 4pm. Temperatures will range from 15°C this morning up to 19°C.
