Five people lost their lives in the immediate aftermath of the rampage, which took place on 1 December 2020. A sixth victim only died at the end of October this year, which may still affect the outcome of the trial.
For now, the 52-year-old defendant stands accused of murder in five cases, and attempted murder in 18 cases.
On the one-year anniversary of the tragic day, the city of Trier will commemorate the event with a ceremony and a concert.
